Jira, Jira Software, Jira What? How to understand 3 awesome products with the same name

A lot of companies use “Jira” and love to talk about how great a product it is to anyone who will listen (us included!) While it seems like Jira might be the miracle workflow management app every business longs for, the name ‘Jira’ itself is actually representative of a much larger suite of programs. Let’s dive in and sort this out already.

Put simply, the name “Jira” is equal to three different products built on the same platform, Jira Software, Jira Work Management (formerly “Jira Core”), and Jira Service Management (formerly “Jira Service Desk”). Not without ambiguity in their titles, each of these products is built for a different use case and contains items to make the work of a team or department easier, more collaborative, and more efficient.

Atlassian Jira Software

Jira Software’s Agile management tactics and Kanban boards help teams move their work visually from start to finish in a way that satisfies even the most OCD of project managers. It includes fantastic workflows out of the box and a sizeable degree of customization available to suit a team’s particular type of work. There’s also a built-in release hub suited to dev teams that makes version and deadline tracking a breeze. And that’s just the first of three flavours of Jira, which can be purchased as a cloud subscription, aptly named Jira Software Cloud which includes Atlassian-managed updates and maintenance, or as Jira Software Data Center an option that’s hosted and managed in-house by your IT department (this is best for very large organizations, and those with regulatory situations that prevent cloud usage). We should mention… There’s also another product out there called Jira Server, but it’s being discontinued as of 2024, so it’s probably best to stick with a Cloud or Data Center version if you’re just getting started. If you’re using any of Atlassian’s server products now, we can help with that.  Atlassian Jira Service Management If anyone’s ever told you to “file a Jira ticket”, this should put things into context. Jira Service Management is the go-to IT helpdesk system used by fortune 500 companies all over the planet. Its per-agent licence model lets it scale with the requirements of your IT department, offering customer support, incident and change management, and IT Service Management capability that integrates with the feature-set found in Jira Software. Is there anything they didn’t think of? Naturally, you can find Jira Service Management as Cloud and Data Center products depending on your organization’s needs, just like Jira Software. It’s best to keep to either Cloud or Data Center set ups for all your Jira products of course, something Avant Systems Group is happy to help with as an . Atlassian Jira Work Management Finally, there’s Jira Work Management, project and workflow management for the rest of us. Jira Work Management takes all the great features of Jira Software and Jira Service Desk and builds tailored workflow configs to bring Agile methodologies to other business departments like HR, Finance, Marketing, and more. Atlassian’s solution to non-technical team projects, workflow approvals, and task management, Jira Work Management integrates seamlessly with other Jira products allowing teams to operate company projects collaboratively, keeping bottlenecks at bay. So there you have it. Jira Software, Jira Service Management, and Jira Work Management: three great products by Atlassian that we’re thrilled to offer here at Avant Systems Group.
