While we were at Atlassian’s Team ’22 conference last week, we got a close up on the announcement of the next generation of cloud-based software in the Atlassian ecosystem and we expect they’ll all be game changers once they’re out of beta. Read on for a Cole’s notes on each of these products and what they could mean for your organization.
It’s a long time coming; Atlassian’s putting together a team member directory that provides insight on which staff members are working on which projects, aptly named ‘Atlas’. It works to open lines of communication between different teams working toward the same goals and allows members to subscribe to project status updates through a social-media-like feed. Those status updates come in the form of a tweet to ensure the content is easy to digest with options for rich-embedding of smart links for greater context if necessary.
Universal user profiles within Atlas allow users to see who’s who and what they can do, and naturally integrates within all Atlassian products. You can also connect messaging/conference apps like Slack and MS Teams for real-time project notifications and IM. Atlas will be a welcome addition to any Atlassian implementation but especially those in larger organizations where finding the right person working on a project can become a challenge.

Billed by Atlassian as “Mission Control for your distributed architecture”, Compass is Atlassian’s middleware platform that aims to bridge the gap between disconnected engineering output information and teams collaborating on projects in a central, searchable way. It provides Information on the people involved with or supporting a project as well, along with the needed meta data to keep runbooks and repos easily accessible. The ‘Scorecard’ feature is customizable to your organization’s requirements and aims to help users understand component health and production-ready status.
Finally, Compass builds a road-map of your team’s components for a bird’s-eye view of relationships and dependancies they might possess. If you subscribe to the Atlassian best-of-breed mantra, This product looks to be a fantastic idea for organizations and developers within them that prefer to work with a custom development tool-chain and offers greater flexibility thanks to Atlassian’s more open integration with non-Atlassian products across their product line.

A common problem in many organizations is that staff and teams spend too much time interpreting data in order to generate the information and insights they actually need from it. Organizations should be able to rely on that data to learn what’s blocking progress and what their ROI looks like much more easily than what many data analysis practices currently allow for. To handle these issues with leveraging their data, organizations often resort to spreadsheet reports or business intelligence tools to create dashboards, but these processes are often very time and resource intensive. Sure, it’s worth the effort, but it shouldn’t be this hard and Atlassian seems to agree.
Enter Atlassian Analytics, powered by Atlassian Data Lake. Atlassian aims to provide an enterprise-grade data visualizer with an interface that is characteristically low-code/no-code right along with most of the Atlassian Stack. It leverages the new Atlassian Data Lake to aggregate information into pre-built, customizable dashboards that are configurable to allow teams to decide which product, instance, or project data they’d like to visualize and report on. These pre-built dashboards are a great starting point and Atlassian Analytics allows for full customization to your business needs via SQL and a new “Visual SQL”; Atlassian’s new way to seek and create data-driven reports without the need to know any code; a particular boon for non-technical teams.
Unsurprisingly, Atlassian’s love for team collaboration extends here as well, with a collaborative charts feature that allows team members to comment and tag charts for analysts to further investigate. Atlassian products are known in the marketplace for comparably ‘open’ integration with a multitude of non-Atlassian applications and the same is true in Atlassian Analytics. It allows other business-vital data sources to combine with Atlassian Product/instance/project data for a complete picture of a team’s performance, a project’s overall progress, or an organization’s journey to the next milestone.
The magic behind the scenes is something they call the Data Lake: a queryable database with pre-modelled data that’s inherently easier to use for analytics. At the outset, Data Lake will aggregate from Jira Software and Jira Service Management, but eventually grow to include the remainder of Atlassian’s product portfolio to perform analysis across all their products out-of-the-box. In addition, Data Lake will allow for connection to popular Business Information tools like PowerBI and Tableau, giving teams the latitude to work in the applications they’re most comfortable with.
